Ouch, enfin un moment pour reprendre le blog avec une nouvelle signature de mon livre Escales autour du monde…
Shanghai et mon talk au magasin Louis Vuitton Plaza 66 ont été une expérience formidable. D’abord, c’était mon premier voyage à Shanghai (je vous en reparlerai bientôt) et donc, forcément un moment unique. Ensuite, le talk a été organisé dans une espace très intime, ce qui a tout de suite créé une ambiance amicale – comme pour mon talk à Paris. Le décor était superbe, avec des objets anciens posés un peu partout, des publicités vintage de grandes villes, un magnifique paravent, conçu spécialement pour la soirée et reprenant le dessin de la couverture du livre… Exactement ce qu’il fallait pour faire partir les invités en voyage. Le travail réalisé par l’équipe de Louis Vuitton sur place m’a émerveillée. Enfin, il y a eu beaucoup de monde, des gens de toutes sortes, acteurs, artistes, amis, journalistes, clients, qui ont participé avec un enthousiasme que l’on voit rarement dans d’autres parties du monde. Quelle joie de sentir autant d’énergie positive ! J’ai passé un moment fantastique et je crois que ceux qui sont venus aussi. Nous avons ri, parlé de choses sérieuses, échangé toutes sortes d’idées… J’ai fait beaucoup de conférences, mais celle-ci a vraiment été spéciale. Elle m’a beaucoup appris, ce qui est aussi une des raisons pour lesquelles j’aime faire des talk et discuter de mon travail. Toutes les questions étaient intéressantes et traitaient de sujets qui nous concernent tous. Par exemple, à un moment, Hung Huang, l’ »Oprah Winfrey » chinoise, qui menait la discussion et traduisait ce que je disais (je parlais en anglais) m’a demandé ce que signifiait pour moi le mot évasion. Car, a t-elle dit, pour les chinois, l’idée d’évasion était liée à une notion politique. Une question passionnante car elle portait sur la perception que l’on pouvait avoir d’une même idée, et d’un mot, selon sa culture, son histoire et son éducation. Je lui ai répondu que je comprenais parfaitement ce qu’elle voulait dire, car si je vivais en Europe, j’étais Chilienne, et chez nous aussi, l’idée d’évasion avait été, à un moment donné, attachée à une notion politique. Je ne pense pas qu’un européen aurait répondu de la même manière ni aurait vraiment compris ce qu’elle voulait dire par cette question. Nous nous sommes trouvé un point commun inattendu qui nous a permis d’explorer un aspect différent du voyage, et cette question m’a prouvée encore une fois, si besoin était, qu’un même mot, aussi simple soit-il, pouvait avoir une signification très différente selon les cultures et engendrer, s’il était mal compris, de vrais problèmes de communication.
Nous avons aussi abordé toutes sortes d’autres sujets, comme la vie entre plusieurs nationalités, la mode, les craintes liées à l’ailleurs, les expériences qui marquent, et beaucoup d’autres choses…
Après le talk, j’ai signé mes livres (beaucoup de gens avaient apportés les leurs, qu’ils avaient déjà acheté et peut-être lu, ce que j’ai trouvé très touchant), donné des interviews, et la soirée s’est poursuivie au troisième étage de ce magnifique magasin, avec un dîner organisé pour ma venue, extrêmement élégant, mais aussi joyeux, drôle et amical, comme l’aurait été une belle soirée entre amis.
Merci encore à vous tous à Shanghai pour cet accueil extraordinaire qui m’a beaucoup émue. Et la prochaine fois, c’est moi qui vous emmène goûter des plats dont vous n’avez jamais entendu parler !
Ouch, finally some time to start blogging again after the last signature of me book World Tour…
Shanghai and the conference I gave at Louis Vuitton Plaza 66 was a great experience. First of all, it was the first time I travelled to Shanghai (which I will write about very soon) and therefore, a unique moment. Then, the travel talk was organized in an intimate spot which immediately created a friendly atmosphere – just like my conference in Paris. The scenary was amazing, with ancient objects all over the room, vintage commercials of big cities, a beautiful screen, created for this evening and reproducing the book cover…Exactly what was needed for the guest to be invited to travel with me. The work done by the Louis Vuitton team on location was stunning. Finally, there were lots of diverse people, such as actors, artists, friends, journalists, clients, who participated enthusiastically to my talk, which I seldom see in other parts of the world. What joy to feel so much positive energy! I had a fantastic time and I believe that those who came did too. We laughed, talked seriously, exchanged all kind of ideas… I have given many conferences, but this one was particularly special to me. It taught me a lot, which is one of the reasons I enjoy doing travel talks and speaking about my work. All the questions were interesting and about subjects that matter to all of us. For example, at some point, Hung Huang, the Chinese « Oprah Winfrey », who was organizing the discussion and translating what I was saying (from English to Chinese) asked me what the word « escape » meant to me. Because, as she said, for Chinese people it was linked to a political notion. A fascinating question because it was about how one idea and word can be perceived according to one’s culture, history and education. I answered I perfectly understood what she meant as even if I lived in Europe, I was Chilean, and for us too the idea of « escape » had been, at some point in my life, attached to a political notion. I do not believe a European would have answered in the way I did or understood what the Chinese meant with this question. We found ouserlves an unexpected point in common, that gave us the chance to see travel from another perspective, and this question proved to me once more that a word, however simple, could have different or even opposed meanings depending on the culture and lead to misunderstanding and serious communication problems.We also talked about other subjects such as life with various nationalities, fashion, fears towards the unknown and travelling, experiences that matter, and so many other things…
After the conference, I signed my books (many people had brought theirs, that they has bought and maybe read, which I found very touching). I also gave interviews, and the night went on with an extremely elegant dinner on the third floor of the beautiful store, organized for my stay, but also very fun, happy and friendly, just like a nice evening among friends would be.Thanks a lot to you all again in Shanghaï for this extraordinary welcome which trully touched me. Next time, I will be the one taking you out to try dishes you’ve never heard of before!
