Je ne sais pas ce que donnera le vote d’aujourd’hui, je sais seulement que tous les grands moments de l’histoire d’un pays, du pays d’où l’on vient, nous rappellent qui nous sommes. Un pays qui ne prend pas de décisions fortes n’existe pas, un pays qui qui ne se bat pas pour ses idées, qui ne se remet jamais en cause, n’est pas un pays qui rend fier ses habitants ni ceux qui le composent – où qu’ils soient dans le monde. Et sans fierté, il n’y a pas de nations, pas de vie pour propulser un pays vers son futur.
Aujourd’hui, ma mère sera peut-être Ecossaise au lieu d’être britannique. Et je suis fière d’être à moitié Ecossaise moi aussi, quel que soit le résultat des votes. Ce pays a des tripes, du cran, du sang bouillant dans les veines. A notre époque de lâcheté et de compromis, de pays faibles, terrifiées par l’avenir, il est capable de se défendre, de regarder son futur, il ne se contente pas d’exister en se soumettant aux autres. Et ça, c’est ce qui fait une nation.
I don’t know what the result of today’s vote will be. l only know that all the great moments in the history of a country, of the country of our birth, serve to remind us who we are. A country that balks at taking strong decisions cannot exist; a country that does not fight for its ideals, that never reexamines the situation, is not a country that inspires pride in its inhabitants, wherever they are in the world. And without pride, a Nation cannot exist. There is nothing to propel it towards the future.
Today, my mother may be Scottish without being British. I am proud to be half Scottish, in any case, no matter what the result of the vote may be. This country has balls, and courage, and vigorous blood in its veins. In this age of cowardice and compromise, of feeble countries, terrified of the future, Scotland is capable of defending itself, of looking ahead, not disposed to being submitted to the decisions of others. And that is what makes a Nation.
