C’est une histoire de renaissance, d’amitié, de talent, et surtout de passion. C’est l’histoire d’un livre qui vous rendra heureux et rendra heureux celui ou celle à qui vous l’offrirez, parce qu’il est superbe et raconte une aventure fantastique.
Tout a commencé il y a quelques années, quand notre ami Yves Carcelle nous a dit qu’il venait d’acheter un bateau, un Runa… un yawl de 1918… Il avait eu l’occasion de voir des bateaux magnifiques durant l’America’s Cup en tant que président de Louis Vuitton, mais de là à en acheter un lui-même, à le restaurer entièrement et à passionner sa famille et ses amis… Il se trouve dans sa maison du sud de la France quand il entend parler de ce petit bijou laissé à l’abandon, disponible pour une bouchée de pain. L’affaire est réglée en une minute. Il le fait transporter au mythique chantier du Guip à Brest. Son ami Bruno Troublé, grand navigateur, suivra le travail. Un travail fou, réalisé par des artisans hors pair, ébénistes, charpentiers, artistes amoureux de la mer et du bois, spécialisés dans la rénovation de voiliers classiques, qui vont passer des milliers d’heures sur l’épave pour lui redonner son aspect d’origine. Mais l’histoire ne s’arrête pas là, car ce Runa a des frères, répartis on ne sait où… Commence alors une enquête incroyable, comme dans un roman policier. L’un a appartenu à un ex-commodore du Royal Yacht Squadron – le plus prestigieux yacht-club anglais. Yves le contacte et part le voir en Angleterre. Un autre est au Danemark. Yves va y aller aussi. Pendant ce temps, le chantier du Guip a diffusé des photos de la restauration en espérant que quelqu’un aura des renseignements. Par un miracle inouï, les photos tombent sous les yeux d’un des propriétaires qui a mis son bateau à sec sur un terrain. Il ne sait pas quoi faire et pense brûler le bateau – s’il n’arrive pas à le vendre. Yves va l’acheter, évidemment. Il part ensuite au Danemark chercher d’autres renseignements, rencontre des gens qui lui montrent un bateau ressemblant beaucoup à celui qu’il cherche. Les chances sont infimes et pourtant… oui, c’est bien un Runa. Puis, un autre apparait en Allemagne…
La suite ? Je vous laisse la découvrir. L’été dernier, Yves m’a montré les épreuves du livre presque terminé. Nous étions sur un autre bateau. Les vagues cognaient les flancs de la coque. Le livre était magnfique. L’histoire rassemble un homme qui a su transmettre sa passion, un ex-commodore, des artisans de génie, des marins qui n’ont pas froid aux yeux, des voyages autour du monde, et un écrivain talentueux qui arrive à maintenir le suspens jusqu’à la fin.

Paris & everywhere – The Runa saga
This is the story of rebirth, friendship and, above all, passion. It is the story of a book that you will enjoy, that will give pleasure to those you give it to, because it is superb and tells of a fantastic adventure.
It starts a few years ago, when our friend Yves Carcelle told us that he had bought a boat, a Runa – a 1918 yawl. He had seen some splendid boats during the America’s Cup, when he was CEO of Louis Vuitton, but from there to buying one himself, restoring it completely and awakening the enthusiasm of his family and friends… He was in his house in the south of France when he heard of a little jewel lying abandoned, for sale at a knockdown price. The deal was struck on the spot. He had it transported to the mythical shipyard of Guip at Brest. His friend Bruno Troublé, a seasoned sailor, supervised the work. A lot of it was carried out by expert craftsmen, carpenters, artists who loved the sea and wood, specialists in renovation traditional sailing ships, willing to invest untold hours of labour to bring a wreck back to its original dignity.
But the story does not end there because the Runa had sister ships, scattered who knew where… So an incredible search started, like in a detective story. One had belonged to an ex-commodore of the Royal Yacht Squadron, the most prestigious yacht club in the United Kingdom. Yves got in touch and went to England. Another specimen was in Denmark. Yves went there too. Meanwhile, the shipyard at Guip had circulated photographs of the restoration, hoping to receive more information. By some astonishing luck, the photos came to the attention of another owner who had left his boat on dry land, and thought of burning it – or selling it. Yves, of course, bought it. Then he left for Denmark, looking for more information, finding people who showed him a boat that seemed very much like what he was looking for. Chances were slight but, yes, it was a Runa. Then another turned up in Germany…
What’s next ? I leave that for you to discover. Last summer, Yves showed me the proofs of a nearly finished book. We were on another boat, the waves slapping the hull. The book is magnificent. The story includes a man who knew how to transmit his passion, and that of an ex-commodore, exceptional artisans, fearless sailors, voyages around the world, and a talented writer who maintains the suspense right up to the end.
THE RUNA SAGA is the only book to give this Christmas !
