En octobre, j’avais commencé à vous raconter notre voyage aux Etats-Unis l’été dernier… Et bien, voici la suite, avec notre séjour à Martha’s Vineyard (après l’Adirondacks).
Je voulais vraiment vous en parler parce que j’ai appris ici des choses passionnantes qui m’ont fait découvrir l’endroit d’une manière complètement différente, très loin des habituels clichés (île vip, rdv des présidents américains, etc.). Je ne savais pas par exemple que l’endroit était connu, et depuis longtemps, par intelligentsia afro-américaine, et par les afro-américains tout court, car c’était l’un des rares lieux où ils pouvaient devenir propriétaires. En 1912, un ancien esclave, Charles Shearer, a pu y acheter un terrain et y a construit le premier B&B pour gens de couleur. Le sénateur Edward William Brooke, le premier sénateur afro-américain à être élu au suffrage universel (et auquel Barak Obama a souvent rendu hommage), y passait ses étés. Martin Luther King et Malcom X y sont venus. L’écrivain Dorothy West, grande dame de la littérature afro-américaine et figure de la célèbre « Renaissance de Harlem » (le mouvement artistique noir des années 20) y vivait depuis les années 40 – son père était un esclave affranchi de Virginie. Je pourrais citer encore de nombreux noms de gens qui ont aidé à faire connaitre l’endroit non seulement pour sa beauté, ou pour être un lieu de vacances, mais aussi pour la liberté qu’on pouvait y trouver. Tout ça m’a donné très envie d’en apprendre plus, et j’ai commandé le livre de Dorothy West, Le Mariage, racontant tout un pan de l’histoire afro-américaine – livre qu’elle a publié à 88 ans ! Je voulais vraiment vous en parler parce que quand un lieu a une histoire aussi forte, on ne voit plus les choses de la même manière.
USA, Martha’s Vineyard – Something different
Last October I started to tell you about our trip to the States the previous August…well, this is the follow-up, including our trip to Martha’s Vineyard after the Adirondacks.
I really wanted to tell you about this because I learnt so many passionately interesting things that helped me to appreciate the place in a completely different way, far-removed from the usual clichés (VIP island, meeting place for American Presidents, etc). Because what I didn’t know was that the African-American intelligentsia – and in fact all African-Americans – have known about this place for quite a long time, as it was one of the rare places where they could own property. In 1912, a former slave, Charles Shearer, was able to buy some land and open the first African-American Bed & Breakfast here. The first African-American Senator, Edward William Brooke – who was elected by universal suffrage (Barak Obama often pays tribute to him) – spent most of his summers there. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X also went there. The writer, Dorothy West, patroness of African-American literature and figurehead of the famous Harlem Renaissance (the New Negro Cultural Movement of the Twenties) lived there from the 1940’s – her father was a former slave from Virginia. I could give you endless lists of people who helped put this place on the map, not just because of its beauty or as somewhere to go on vacation, but also because of the inherent freedom to be found there. This inspired me to find out more and so I got hold of Dorothy West’s book, The Wedding, in which she tells the story of a large chunk of African-American history – a book she published at the age of 88! I just had to let you know about this because, when a place is steeped in so much history, you no longer see things in the same way.
