Mon nouveau livre est sorti aujourd’hui en France et aux États-Unis. Que puis-je dire… Que c’est mon 7ème livre et que c’est toujours la même grande aventure. Il a été inspiré par mes années passées dans la campagne sud-américaine et j’y parle de nature et d’environnement, avec 24 récits de voyages dans des lieux magnifiquement préservés, partout dans le monde. Vous y trouverez à chaque fois, un hôtel magique pour vivre en contact total avec la nature – et tous ont une vraie démarche environnementale. Un grand nombre des destinations du livre sont inscrites au patrimoine de l’UNESCO et offrent des expériences extraordinaires. Je l’ai fait en pensant à cette vie folle que nous vivons, et au besoin que nous avons de respirer, de nous évader, d’avoir de superbes paysages devant nous au réveil.

Il est paru en version française et anglaise et voici quelques sites où vous pouvez l’acheter. Il est aussi dans toutes les bonnes librairies bien sûr. Enjoy !

My new book came out today in France and the United States. What can I say… It is my 7th book and it’s always the same great adventure. It was inspired by the years I spent in the South American countryside. It’s about nature and the environment, with 24 travel stories about beautifully preserved locations around the world. Each time, you will discover a magic hotel to live in harmony with nature – and all of these have are eco-friendly. Numerous destinations in the book are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and all offer extraordinary experiences. I wrote it thinking about the crazy life we’re living and how we need to breathe, get away, see superb landscapes in front of us when we wake up.

My new book was published in French and English. It is available on the Internet and of course in all the good bookstores. Enjoy !

Hello everyone (past stories and upcoming conference & book)

Here is my little update in English, and various stories. First, I wrote about what really matters (in life). Good souvenirs. Strong life histories. A friend of mine got severely ill and it made me think about what can help people in this situation. As for example, every great and beautiful experience one has lived. I thought again about my parents’ photo albums I used to look at when I was a child and which seemed to me only to be a collection of happy and light moments. I now mostly see these as solid rocks I can hold on to in hard times. All these trips we not as careless as I thought, these were not only holidays, but things seen, things experienced, moments which reflex an openness in other people, a will to live life. Today, I tell myself that if one day everything must end, the moments I’m living, just like the ones my parents lived, will maybe give me strenght to fight, or the courage to let go, serenely, without regrets.

Then, I wrote about a day at the National Geographic offices in Paris. I wanted to pay tribute to this magazine I was lucky to write stories for that were very important to me. With NG, I went to Rwanda to write about the work of Médecins du Monde (Doctors of the World). To Chile, on the land of the Huasos and the footsteps of my family. Stories which enabled me to talk about countries, people, their vision of the world and what makes their existence. It’s what I love most about my job.

Eventually, I spent a few days in Engadine, Switzerland, a magnificent region. A huge bowl of fresh air, hiking and nature! Overall, a spledid short break (as you can see in my pictures!).

I will also use this message to announce that on Wednesday, March 28th, I will be giving a conference in Paris at the Cercle Interalliée (& sign my new book intitled Escape Hotel Stories, coming out march 15th- I’ll keep you posted, bien -sûr…) My book will be discussed, as well as travels, it will be nice and friendly. So, if you’re living in Paris or if you are visiting and would like to come, you can send me your street address at bertrand.matteoli@wanadoo.fr and I will gladly send you an invitation!

One last thing, I wrote a short text for the superb website www.luxurytravelstories.com. It is called « The Age of Great Exploration ». It’s about when I was in Alaska last summer (the full story and photographs are on my blog). Another great souvenir.

The Age of Great Exploration

This is the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, taken while I was writing my book “Escape Hotel Stories”. One day we went by kayak to see the Grewingk iceberg, near the Kachemac Bay Park, a protected nature reserve, almost entirely wild; We were only four and had made a long trek through dense forest to get there. The turquoise tint of the iceberg was so intense that it hurt the eyes. The ice cracked only a few meters from where we stood and fell into the water with an awesome groan. It was as if we were the first to ever set foot there, as though we had entered the realm of the great explorers.

Engadine – Suisse, montagne & nature !

C’est comme être au bout du monde. Pourtant, c’est juste en Suisse. La route de Milan à Saint Moritz était vide, ou quasiment. Il y avait un grand vent frais, un soleil chaud et brillant, une lumière, ah cette lumière ! Bleu, blanche, brumeuse, argentée… Impossible à décrire exactement. C’était comme être en Alaska ou en Suède. Nous étions un petit groupe d’amis et tout le monde a fait exactement ce qu’il voulait. On a skié, on n’a rien fait du tout, on a essayé le ski de fond (j’ai essayé – pas si facile d’ailleurs…). On a surtout profité du ciel immense, du silence, de la nature.

L’Engadine, je ne connaissais pas. Des amis milanais nous ont proposé de partir quelques jours avec eux. Nous les avons retrouvés à Milan, nous sommes tous montés dans la même voiture, et voilà. Des cols, des vallées, des lacs, des glaciers noyés dans la brume…Une merveille. La région a été décrite par Rilke, Hesse, photographiée (avec un humour formidable) par Jacques Henri Lartigue. Sur la route et dans les villages, les gens sont polis, vous saluent d’un signe de tête ou d’un sourire quand ils vous croisent. Chaque personne rencontrée pendant mon (bref) essai de ski de fond était d’une courtoisie qui n’existe plus nulle part, lançant un petit Grazie, buona giornata, quand ils nous dépassaient mon amie Grace et moi. Vraiment très agréable. C’est un autre rythme, d’autres couleurs, une nature brute qui fait du bien. Je ne suis pas une fan de ski mais la montagne est vraiment un univers spécial. Le matin, les paysages étaient blancs comme de grosses meringues et si on marchait un peu, tout avait disparu, et il ne restait plus que les lacs bleutés. J’ai noté tout un tas d’idées, de livres, d’adresses… Bref, voici :

Adresses: Hotel Bellavista (surtout pour le restaurant, super) – Crystal Hotel (ne vous arrêtez pas à l’extérieur très laid. Les chambres sont charmantes et le personnel aussi) – Nira Alpina (design) à Silvaplana – Restaurant Chesa Veglia à St Moritz, 2 via Veglia, – Restaurant Chasellas, via Suvretta 22 – Une idée de promenade de mon amie Grace : De Celerina à Lac de Staz (45 minutes environ).
Aventure: Pour l’isolement total, l’Hotel Muottas Muragl – Prendre l’historique Glacier Express qui passe par des paysages sublimes et les 91 tunnels et 291 ponts de la région – Aller avec un guide jusqu’au Morteratsch Glacier, le plus grand glacier des Alpes Orientales.
Livres: La Montagne Magique de Thomas Mann (qui se passe en haute Engadine). Lartigue en hiver – les magnifiques photos (pleines de drôlerie) de Jacques Henri Lartigue prises dans la région de 1913 à 1981.
