Dans mon dernier post je vous disais que cet été, après Johannesburg (et avant d’aller visiter le reste de l’Afrique du Sud) nous avons décidé d’aller au Botswana. Nous avons pensé que puisque nous étions dans cette région du monde, nous pouvions faire un safari – ce que nous n’avions encore jamais fait. J’étais d’abord un peu réticente à l’idée (très touristique, pas assez authentique, trop organisé…), mais l’expérience a été en fait extraordinaire. Je pense que cela a beaucoup à voir avec le choix de notre camp – le Mombo Camp dans la Moremi Game Reserve, une réserve officiellement protégée au cœur du fantastique Delta de l’Okavango. Si vous ne connaissez pas l’Afrique, c’est un endroit qui vous fera comprendre pourquoi des gens comme Rudyard Kipling sont tombés amoureux de ce continent. Le Delta de l’Okavango est non seulement exceptionnel du point de vue de sa faune et de sa flore, mais on y trouve plusieurs millions d’îles qui forment un paysage incroyable, sans une habitation, s’étendant dans toutes les directions. Et la Moremi Game Reserve est le territoire de tous les animaux sauvages que vous pouvez imaginer. La plupart du temps vous êtes le seul spectateur, au milieu du paysage infini. Il n’y a pas de moments plus magiques que les matins africains, quand vous regardez le paysage encore endormi noyé dans la brume blanche. C’était merveilleux aussi de ne plus être relié à internet aux portables ou au reste du monde.
Je vous écris tout ça pendant que mon livre, Map stories, histoires de cartes, est en train d’être envoyé aux journalistes dans de nombreux pays. J’espère qu’ils l’aimeront et que vous aussi. C’est toujours un grand moment pour un auteur (même après 10 livres…) et je ne pense que cela changera jamais – heureusement, en un sens. Botswana – Fantastic Africa, and a little about my book
In my lat post, I was letting you know that this summer, after Johannesburg (and before visiting the rest of South Africa), we decided to go to Botswana. We thought that since we were near that region, we could go for a safari – which we had never done before. At first, I was a little reluctant to the idea (very touristic, not authentic enough, too organized…), but it turned out to be an amazing experience. I believe it had a lot to do with where we stayed – the Mombo Camp in the Moremi Game Reserve, a reserve officially protected at the heart of the fantastic Okavango Delta. If you do not know Africa, it is a place which will make you understand why people such as Rudyard Kipling fell in love with this continent. The Okavango Delta is not only exceptional from a fauna and flora perspective, but it is composed of several million islands which form an incredible scenery, free of constructions, and that stretches endlessly. in every direction. Also, the Moremi Game Reserve is the territory of all the wild animals you can think of. Most of the time, You are the only spectator, at the center of this infinite panorama. There are no better magical moments than the African mornings, contemplating the landscape still asleep in the white mist. It was also wonderful being disconnected from the Internet to phone calls and even from the the rest of the world.
I am writing this while my latest book, Map Stories: The Art of Discovery, is being sent to journalists in numerous countries. I hope they will enjoy it and so will you. It is always a big moment as a writer (even after ten books…) and I think it will never change – thank goodness in a way.
