Je viens de rentrer d’Écosse où Bertrand et moi avons passé une semaine – retour un peu fatiguant parce que notre vol (après un long trajet en voiture jusqu’à l’aéroport) a eu 3h et demi de retard. Il faisait 12 degrés à Edinburgh, et en atteignant Orly, le commandant de bord a annoncé « 3 degrés à Paris ». C’était bien la première fois que j’entendais dire que le temps en Écosse était meilleur qu’à Paris !
J’étais ravie de revoir ce pays magique – le pays de ma mère – et j’en ai aussi profité pour faire quelques recherches pour mon prochain livre. Pas trop en fait, parce que nous avons surtout passé beaucoup de temps dans notre hôtel (Inverlochy Castle – merci à tous pour votre FANTASTIQUE accueil) et dans les Highlands, vers Glencoe – un des endroits les plus fabuleux qui soit au monde, qui fait penser à un décor mythologique (en particulier sur la route A82). Vous vous souvenez de la scène où James Bond/Daniel Craig pilote son Aston Martin silver-birch à travers des montagnes spectaculaires dans Skyfall ? …
Cette fois, nous avons gardé deux grandes journées pour nous promener tranquillement à Edinburgh, principalement dans Stockbridge, un quartier que j’adore, rempli de restaurants et de boutiques ravissantes. L’architecture est superbe, avec des maisons géorgiennes de toute beauté qui donnent la sensation d’être dans un roman de Conan Doyle. Nous sommes descendus au Nira Caledonia, l’ancienne résidence de l’écrivain Christopher North, célèbre au 19ème siècle et à ce qu’on dit, un très bon vivant ! Et je suis enfin entrée chez Stewart Christie & Co, le plus ancien tailleur d’Ecosse (la maison existe depuis 1720), un magasin que j’avais envie de connaître depuis longtemps mais où je n’avais jamais eu le temps d’aller. Si vous voulez voir un vrai tailleur écossais – qui pourra vous faire un kilt sur mesure – n’hésitez pas à pousser la porte. L’endroit est vraiment unique. Je ne vous conseillerai jamais assez non plus d’aller diner dans un pub, parce que c’est là que vous trouverez la vraie ambiance écossaise. Nous avons passé une soirée formidable au Bailie, avec tout le quartier ou presque (et la nourriture est excellente). Une belle découverte, juste au coin de St Stephen’s street, un autre petit bijou de ce quartier.
Edinburgh est une ville extraordinaire. Par sa beauté, ses habitants vraiment charmants, et aussi son rythme, tranquille, incroyablement apaisant. C’est comme être à bord d’une magnifique locomotive à vapeur du siècle dernier avec tout le confort moderne (locomotive que nous avons d’ailleurs croisée car il y en a vraiment une – « The Jacobite » – qui fait le trajet Mallaig-Fort William). Je vous conseille tout de même d’y aller en été, et si vous voulez voir quelque chose de vraiment typique, ne ratez pas le Festival d’Edinburgh. Ca, c’est vraiment écossais.
Un autre endroit que j’adore : la Scottish National Portrait gallery. Quel lieu magnifique.

Scotland – New year
I have just returned from Scotland where Bertrand and I spent a week – we were somewhat exhausted because our flight was delayed by 3 and a half hours (after a very long car journey to the airport). It was 12 degrees in Edinburgh but when we arrived in Orly, the pilot said it was 3 degrees in Paris. This is the first time that I have ever heard of the weather in Scotland being better than that in Paris! I was delighted to revisit this magical country (my mother’s country) and I was also able to do a bit of research for my next book. Not that much really because we spent quite a lot of time in our hotel (Inverlochy Castle – Thank you very much for the WONDERFUL welcome) and exploring the Highlands around Glencoe – one of the most fabulous places in the world that is reminiscent of a fairy-tale décor (particularly along the A82). Remember Skyfall? The scenes of Daniel Craig steering his silver-birch Aston Martin through amazing mountains?…
This time we reserved two whole days to stroll at leisure around Edinburgh, mainly in Stockbridge, an area I adore, full of restaurants and ravishing little shops. The architecture is also superb, with stunning Georgian houses straight out of a Conan Doyle novel – We stayed at the Nira Caledonia, a period residence that was once home to Christopher North, a renowned 19th century essayist and bon vivant! And I finally crossed the threshold of Stewart Christie & Co, the oldest tailor in the whole of Scotland (they opened in 1720). I’ve always wanted to see this shop but I never had the time to do so. So if you want to meet a true Scottish tailor – maybe for a made-to-measure kilt – then don’t hesitate to go in, as it is quite unique. I cannot urge you strongly enough to have a meal in a pub because that is where you will find the true atmosphere of Scotland. We spent a wonderful evening at Bailie, where we met up with everyone else who lived in the area, or nearly – and the food was excellent. A great discovery, just on the corner of St Stephen Street – definitely another must.
Edinburgh really is an extraordinary city. Because of it’s beauty, the people living there – who really are charming – and also the quiet, peaceful and incredibly calming feel of the place, just like being on a magnificent steam train from the last Century but with all today’s mod cons (we actually saw one – « The Jacobite » – as it continues to run between Mallaig-Fort and William). However, I would suggest you go during the summer and if you really want to see something really typical, go during the Edinburgh Festival. That is well and truly Scottish.
